Work with Martin Rundfeldt
Martin joined BIOTRONIK as a student employee while he was in university—today, he works in technical support for external devices and helps design processes that make global technical support more efficient. In the interview, he talks about his journey from 3D printing in the Application Lab to the Quality Assurance department, the creative freedom he has in his job, and his motivation to solve technical problems pragmatically.
When technology has to work: Working in Technical Support at BIOTRONIK
How long have you been with BIOTRONIK, and what do you do here?
I’ve been with BIOTRONIK since 2019, first as a student employee and, since January 2022, as a full-time employee. I originally completed an apprenticeship as a machinist, but I wanted to further my professional development, so I decided to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering with a focus on production systems at the Berlin University of Applied Sciences. I also wrote my master's thesis at BIOTRONIK.
It was a real stroke of luck for me that I was able to start my career here right after that. Even during my bachelor's program, I delved deeply into the topic of 3D printing and quickly realized just how much potential this technology holds. That's why it was clear to me that I should continue in this field for the time being.

What exactly did you do in the Application Lab?
The Application Lab was all about trying out new automation solutions and figuring out which technologies really drive our development processes forward. A lot of it was done using rapid prototyping: Develop ideas, test them right away, and quickly see what works and what doesn't.
I was responsible for setting up, operating, and further developing a 3D printing facility that supplied the product and process development teams, as well as the lab and manufacturing areas, with prototypes, tools, and fixtures. Through the targeted use of 3D printing, development projects were able to be implemented more quickly and efficiently. This also included product samples for trade shows and replacement parts for repairs.
Why did you later decide to switch internally to Technical Support?
I’ve been involved with 3D printing for a long time, and that’s how I became known in the company as “the guy with the printers.” Over time, however, I realized that I wanted to broaden my perspective and take a more holistic approach to solutions—with a greater focus on software and systemic relationships.
When my current position was posted internally, I wouldn’t have even applied at first, based on the job description. But a conversation with my future manager piqued my curiosity. Her approach and the idea of helping to shape the new team won me over.
What does your work look like today?
Since August 2025, I’ve been part of the External Devices Tech Support team, which is part of the Patient Safety department within the Quality division. We support our sales organizations worldwide with technical questions about our products.
At first glance, that sounds like a traditional help desk. In fact, it's significantly more. We're a small team and have a lot of creative freedom. In addition to providing operational support, we work on further developing our processes, for example in the areas of systems engineering, business processes, and building an internal knowledge base.
A typical day begins with us reviewing and assigning support tickets together. After that, we help our colleagues in the field with troubleshooting. At the same time, we are moving forward with projects to make knowledge available in a structured, automated, and global manner. I particularly like this combination of technical depth, teamwork, and creative freedom.
How did you first learn about BIOTRONIK back then?
During my studies, I first heard about BIOTRONIK from a professor who had previously worked here himself. In a lecture on work organization, he shared many practical examples from his time at BIOTRONIK that have stuck with me.
His enthusiasm for industrial engineering inspired me to explore this topic in greater depth. I eventually came across a student position in industrial engineering at BIOTRONIK through a job portal and applied for it.
What made you decide to join us?
For me, it was the combination of technology and purpose that made the difference. As a mechanical engineer in the medical technology field, the idea of working on products that truly help people immediately appealed to me.
On top of that, there was the location: an internationally oriented medtech company right in the heart of Berlin. It wasn't until the application process that I realized just how large and significant BIOTRONIK really is—a globally active, privately held company with strong roots in Berlin. It was clear to me: You don't often find this combination here.
What makes your work at BIOTRONIK special for you today?
For one thing, it's the product itself. Knowing that our work can save or improve lives really motivates me. I also appreciate the great creative freedom. BIOTRONIK actively encourages you to share your own ideas, and you can really make a difference. I experienced this particularly during the development of the 3D printing division.
In our current team, too, we work in a very open and cooperative manner. We are not highly specialized; rather, we are generally available to discuss a wide range of topics. This promotes responsibility, communication, and collaborative learning. What motivates me most of all is solving problems—in the past in 3D printing, and today in tech support. I like to take a pragmatic approach to issues and redesign things without unnecessary bureaucracy.
What opportunities for professional growth have you experienced here?
At BIOTRONIK, I’ve had the opportunity from the very beginning to develop both vertically and horizontally. I found one phase particularly exciting: I spent 18 months working part-time (50 percent) in process development—a sort of internal internship.
I was able to gain insights into product development processes, work on statistical process analysis, documentation, and our PLM system, and figure out which area is the best long-term fit for me. In addition, I have attended internal training sessions on moderation and facilitation, as well as external continuing education courses in project management. The training programs are very diverse and of high quality.
What advice would you give to applicants who want to start at BIOTRONIK?
Reach out early to people who already work at BIOTRONIK. This gives you a much more realistic picture of a job and the company culture than any job posting ever could. Personal impressions are a huge help when making a decision.
