25 Years of BIOTRONIK Home Monitoring: The Future of Cardiac Care Began in 2000
What if your cardiologist could spot a problem before you feel it? In 2000, BIOTRONIK made that vision real. With the launch of BIOTRONIK Home Monitoring®, the world’s first telemedicine system for remote follow-up of cardiac implant patients, we helped change how physicians care for people.
From a Bold Idea to Everyday Care
Home Monitoring was built with a simple goal: to give patients more safety and physicians timely insights. Two and a half decades later, it supports earlier detection of critical events, reduces unnecessary clinic visits, and helps improve outcomes for millions of people worldwide. What started as an innovation is now part of standard care in many health systems.
Since the opening of our Home Monitoring Service Center (HMSC) in 2000, more than one million BIOTRONIK devices with Home Monitoring functionality have been implanted in more than 65 countries.
What Home Monitoring Means for Patients and Physicians
Home Monitoring is a technology that enables continuous, secure follow-up of cardiac active implants such as pacemakers, ICDs, CRT systems, and implantable cardiac monitors (ICMs) —helping to reduce the need for in-person clinic visits. Clinicians receive relevant data in near real time and can adjust therapy early when needed.
The benefits are backed by evidence: studies have shown fewer inappropriate shocks, fewer hospitalizations, and even a reduction in overall mortality for certain patient groups.¹
For patients, that adds up to greater safety and quality of life. As Wolfgang Koch, a patient from Berlin, who received a BIOTRONIK pacemaker with Home Monitoring in 2016, puts it:
“The fact that somebody is checking on my medical data gives me a great sense of security.”
By automatically analyzing the data and notifying the doctor when individually defined thresholds are exceeded, workflow efficiency improves significantly, enabling the doctor to focus on patients who genuinely require attention.
Professor Gerhard Hindricks, Acting Director of the Department of Cardiology, Angiology and Intensive Care Medicine and Chief Integration Officer at Deutsches Herzzentrum der Charité, on BIOTRONIK Home Monitoring: “Home Monitoring is a technology platform that makes a significant contribution to improving the quality of life and longevity of patients with pacemakers, defibrillators, or CRT devices. In addition, Home Monitoring helps reduce healthcare costs in the medium to long term.
Milestones on the Journey
- 2000: Global market launch of Home Monitoring: BIOTRONIK pioneered continuous device remote monitoring
- 2010: TRUST study demonstrates improved workflow efficiency: Remote monitoring of ICD patients is safe and can replace in-office device checks1
- 2014: IN-TIME study proves clinical benefit of new digitally enabled workflows: Reduction of all-cause mortality in HF patients by telemonitoring with BIOTRONIK Home Monitoring2

Why It Matters Now More Than Ever
Telemonitoring has become part of standard care for many heart failure patients around the world. Driven by aging populations, limited healthcare resources, and rapid advances in data science and AI, its importance is only growing. With smarter algorithms and better interoperability, clinicians can focus on what matters most: timely, targeted patient care.
What’s Next
As a pioneer in connected cardiology, BIOTRONIK continues to expand digital solutions across additional indications. The future we’re building is connected, smart, and patient‑centered, where insights flow seamlessly and prevention and patient empowerment take center stage.
25 years of BIOTRONIK Home Monitoring®—and we’re far from finished.
